Science as Art 2018

02 October, 2018

Visual representation of science and technology presents a unique connection between scientists, artists and the general public. When said images contain aesthetic elements that transform them into objects of beauty and art, Science as Art is born.

Since its inception, Science as Art has challenged KAUST researchers to share inspiring images produced in laboratories with the wider KAUST community.

This year, Materials Research Society (MRS) KAUST student chapter is proud to present the 4th annual Science as Art competition.
The rules are very simple:

  • Choose a research image from your laboratory with artistic potential
  • Enhance the artistic value of the image by editing
  • Submit your entry to the following link: https://goo.gl/forms/19dBBjL6a2R7zYEa2

The deadline for the submissions is October 25th at midnight.

There are no restrictions on the eligibility of imaging techniques, images may be obtained by any imaging technique. Moreover, the results of modelling and simulation work can also be submitted. Images can be digitally enhanced and post-processed, without alteration to the original findings. Because the focus is on art, the aesthetic rather then the scientific quality of the image is the key element in the competition.

We invite you to browse the images of past years' entries around the world at http://www.mrs.org/science-as-art/

The accepted submissions will be exhibited in the Campus Library (Building 12) from 3rd  to 8th of November, 2018. The judging panel, consisting of KAUST professors will anonymously rate the submitted works. The award ceremony will be held on October 8th at 4 pm, where the winners will be announced:

  1. Place: Apple iPad, 9.7'' Wi-Fi
  2. Place: Beats by Dr.Dre Solo3 Wireless, On-Ear Headset, Bluetooth/Wired
  3. Place: Apple TV 4K, Media Player
  • People's Choice Award: Fitbit Alta HR, Fitness Band

The event is open to all KAUST students and postdocs. Only one submission per person is accepted and no joint submissions will be accepted. Images must be edited by the submitter and no editing done by professional illustrators (i.e. KAUST Research Publication Services) will be accepted.

By submitting material for the event, the participant consents to allow the MRS student chapter at KAUST to display these images both on the MRS website and within printed material at KAUST.

This event is sponsored by Materials Research Society Student Chapter and Graduate Affairs.

The chapter would like to thank Siham Fatani for her help in organizing the event.
