Time and Place: Friday, the 4th of July, 2014. From 08:15 pm to 09:45 pm at the Auditorium between Building 4 and Building 5

Some Topics of MRS Discussion Panel:
-What is the difference between Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, and between Chemical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering?
-How can students make balance between their participations in national/international competitions and their daily study/homework at school?
-What are the skills that are important to be learned during this summer program and during high school years?
-How can students determine their bachelor program/department?
-Advices for students who are planning to study abroad. Answering students' questions.

Our aim: Increase the awareness about some important issues for high school and undergraduate students.

Organized by: Materials Research Society (MRS) Student Chapter at KAUST and Saudi Initiatives Department at KAUST.

*The Saudi Research Science Institute (SRSI) is a student academic mentorship program that has been going on at KAUST since 2011. The program is a 6 week summer internship, where a selected group of academically motivated high-school students from throughout Saudi Arabia, have the opportunity to conduct university-level research under the mentorship of KAUST Professors.

In April 22, 2014, 11 members of MRS Student Chapter joined an official visit to SABIC Corporate Research and Innovation (CRI) Center at KAUST Innovation Cluster.SABIC, Saudi Basic Industries Corporation, is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of chemicals, fertilizers, plastics and metals.

Mr. Raeid Sadeq and Mr. Salah A Al-Saffar, from SABIC Research Support, and their colleagues had professionally hosted our one-hour visit with informative and interesting explanations about the main projects/departments and facilities at SABIC-CRI center. It has three main departments: Biochemistry, Chemistry and New Materials. Each department includes many projects such as Algae fuel, mass-production of catalysts and coatings for solar cells.

In addition, Mr. Salah encourage MSE graduates to apply as research scientists in CRI center and join in one of the existing projects or they can submit new proposals to work on their ideas/interests.

Thanks to Maha Alamoudi, Secretary of MRS Student Chapter for organizing this visit by contacting with SABIC-CRI center representatives.

In Student Representatives Luncheon of 2013 MRS Fall Meeting, achievements of MRS-KAUST Student Chapter were briefly presented by Tahani Felemban, a Saudi PhD student in Materials Science and Engineering and a member in KAUST-MRS Student Chapter. It was a nice chance to exchange event ideas between students of MRS University Chapters from around the world. It is worth to mention that Tahani participated in 2013 MRS Fall Meeting by presenting her academic poster.

A new initiative from MRS Chapter at KAUST: "What is MSE Program?", a presentation and discussion session about Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Program at KAUST. It was held during WEP 2014:

- Speaker: Maha Alamoudi, Secretary of MRS Chapter and Graduate Student at KAUST.

- Significance: Since there is no MSE undergraduate program at any Saudi university, MRS Chapter has a responsibility to introduce MSE to Saudi undergraduate students.

- Audience: Saudi Initiatives Department helped MRS Chapter to invite Saudi undergraduate students, who have Sciences or Engineering of Physics, Chemistry or related backgrounds.

-Refreshments had been sponsored by Graduate Students.

All MRS Chapter members and their spouses were invited to attend (MRS Chapter Members Gathering). It was an informal meeting to celebrate our chapter's achievements. During this gathering:

-Certificates of recognitions, signed by Dr. Aram Amassain, were awarded to the volunteers of ICFE-PV event.

-Small gifts (brooch of MRS Chapter logo) were given to ALL attendance.

-Catering was provided by Graduate Services .
